Nelson Mandela International Day (better known as Mandela Day) is celebrated annually on 18 July (Nelson Mandela’s birthday). Mandela Day is meant to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela, and his values, through volunteering and community service. Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an impact. Mandela fought for social justice for 67 years and individuals are urged to give back for 67 minutes on Mandela Day.
Many of you will recognise this Madiba quote, “A good heart and a good head is a formidable combination”, from the DevCom email signature. It has been my favourite “Madiba words” for many years and continues to inspire all of us at DevCom every day.
DevCom has a new-found respect for bakers! Our 67 minutes turned into a full day in the kitchen as we baked more than 100 cupcakes for the “caregivers” (teachers, policemen and firemen) in the Doornkloof area. They were delivered in boxes with a note that read:
Sometimes the helper needs help and for being helped they become better helpers. Today, we want to just take a minute to thank you: a helper and care-giver. Thank you for working selflessly to help and teach others. We recognised our care-givers on Madiba day! With warm wishes for you, DevCom
